Roofing in Northeast Minneapolis
Northeast runs from some of the oldest frame houses in the city near the river to postwar ramblers up by the Columbia Heights line, and the roofs need different conversations.

Lower Northeast: old houses, many layers
Holland, Logan Park, Bottineau and the blocks closer to the river carry late nineteenth and early twentieth century frame houses, many of them modest working-family houses. Those roofs have usually been re-covered more than once. It is common to find two layers of asphalt over old board decking, and sometimes shakes under that. Plan on a full tear-off, and on replacing some decking, because board sheathing with wide gaps does not meet most shingle makers' nailing rules.
Waite Park and the postwar north end
Waite Park and the neighbourhoods around it were not fully built out until after the Second World War, and the housing shows it: 1950s ramblers with simple gable or hip roofs at a modest pitch. Those houses have a real attic over the whole top floor, which makes the ice-dam fix far more straightforward than on an older story-and-a-half. Blow in insulation, seal the ceiling bypasses, and most of the problem goes. The lower pitch also means hail sits and does its damage more evenly across the field, so a hail inspection should cover every slope.
Brick chimneys and flat additions
Northeast has plenty of houses with tall brick chimneys and rear additions roofed at a low slope. Chimneys wider than 30 inches that sit mid-slope need a cricket under city guidance, and older ones often have none. Low-slope additions under 2 in 12 cannot take asphalt shingles at all; between 2 and 4 in 12 they need doubled underlayment. A shingle crew that treats the addition like the main roof is setting up a leak.

Northeast Minneapolis questions
My Northeast house has three layers of shingles. Is that legal?
Current code does not allow a third layer, and anything over one layer has to come off at the next reroof. It is not uncommon on older houses re-covered decades ago.
Do ramblers get ice dams too?
Less often, and they are easier to fix, because the attic is accessible and can be insulated and sealed properly.
